Detroit Hands Toronto Another Loss on the Road

DETROIT (Reuter) - Brendan Shanahan recorded his eighth career hat trick and Darren McCarty had a goal and an assist as the Detroit Red Wings handed the Toronto Maple Leafs their seventh straight road loss, 5-2.

Shanahan completed his first hat trick as a Red Wing at 10:20 of the second period, beating goaltender Felix Potvin with a one-timer from the right faceoff circle and putting Detroit ahead for good, 3-2.

In other NHL games:

At Hartford, Alexander Mogilny had two goals and three assists and linemate Mike Ridley added two goals and two assists, leading the Vancouver Canucks to their fourth win in five games, 6-2 over the Hartford Whalers.

At Dallas, John MacLean's breakaway goal with 1:56 remaining gave the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars.

At New York, Tommy Salo made 29 saves and Marty McInnis scored twice as the New York Islanders beat the Philadelphia Flyers for the third time this season, 4-1.

At Pittsburgh, Jaromir Jagr's shorthanded goal with 9:18 left in the third period lifted the Pittsburgh Penguins into a 2-2 tie with the Montreal Canadiens.

At Tampa Bay, Dominik Hasek recorded his second shutout of the season and Brian Holzinger, Curtis Brown and Randy Burridge scored in the third period to give the Buffalo Sabres a 3-0 victory over the floundering Tampa Bay Lightning.

At Washington, Lance Pitlick's goal with 52 seconds left in the second period snapped a tie and lifted the Ottawa Senators to their first-ever road win over the Washington Capitals, 2-1.

At Colorado, Mark Messier and Pat Flatley each scored twice and Mike Richter made 31 saves as the New York Rangers surprised the Colorado Avalanche, 5-2, for a split of their six-game road trip.

At Edmonton, Byron Dafoe came within five seconds of a shutout and five different players scored as the Los Angeles Kings broke a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.
