
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Reuter) - Danny Wuerffel of the University of Florida on Wednesday was named the winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented to the nation's top senior quarterback.
Wuerffel has completed 164-of-277 passes for 2,862 yards and 30 touchdowns to lead the 10-0 Gators to the number one ranking in the country. The school meets No. 2 Florida State on Saturday.
His 176.0 passing efficiency rating is currently second in the country, while his career mark of 164.4 rates first all-time in the NCAA. Last year, Wuerffel set a single-season NCAA record with a rating of 178.4.
Wuerffel holds 25 school, eight Southeastern Conference and two NCAA records, while guiding Florida to a 31-2-1 record as a starter over the last four years. He will be presented with the award in Louisville on Dec. 13.
The six other finalists for the award included California's Pat Barnes, Colorado's Koy Detmer, Arizona State's Jake Plummer, Notre Dame's Ron Powlus, Brigham Young's Steve Sarkisian and Northwestern's Steve Schnur.
