LAHAINA, Hawaii (Reuter) -- Second-ranked Kansas will meet an unexpected opponent in Virginia Wednesday for the title of the Maui Invitational.
The Cavaliers (2-0) advanced to the final with a 75-68 victory over No. 16 Massachusetts Tuesday. Norman Nolan and Courtney Alexander finished with 20 points each, while Harold Deane scored 13 points and Curtis Staples added 11 and eight rebounds for Virginia.
The Jayhawks (3-0) bounced back from a poor shooting first half by making 19-of-34 shots over the final 20 minutes to defeat California, 85-67. Scot Pollard had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Raef LaFrentz added 18 and nine as the five starters combined for 72 points.
Virginia advanced to the semifinals Monday with a 93-70 victory over South Carolina, while Kansas raced to an early 18-0 lead and never looked back, crushing Louisiana State, 82-53.
The Jayhawks, who finished fourth in their only other Maui Invitational appearance (1987), have split two all-time meetings with Virginia. The Cavaliers posted a 60-59 win at the 1995 NCAA Midwest Regional, while Kansas claimed a 72-66 triumph at last year's Great Eight Tournament.
