(NEW YORK) - Freshman Mike Chappell hit two three-pointers in a second-half run as number five Duke held off 21st-ranked Tulsa 72-67 in the semifinals of the Pre-season National Invitation Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Greg Newton scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half for the Blue Devils (3-0), who improved to 10-1 all-time in the Pre-season NIT. Duke, which won the Pre-season NIT in 1985, is in the finals for the second time.
Shea Seals scored 25 points and Rod Thompson added 13 for Tulsa (2-1), which will play the loser of the Indiana-Evansville game for third place on Friday. The Golden Hurricane pulled within 69-67 with 25 seconds to play and had a chance to tie the game at 70-67, but Thompson opted to drive the lane for a basket instead of a potential game-tying three-pointer.
In another NIT semifinal, Andrae Patterson's eight-foot fadeaway jumper as time expired lifted number 17 Indiana to a 74-73 victory over intrastate rival Evansville.
Patterson finished with 20 points and A.J. Guyton added 18 for Indiana (3-0), which will play Duke in Friday's championship game. Evansville (2-1), denied its first-ever win over the Hoosiers, will play number 21 Tulsa in the consolation game.
