1. INTRODUCTION

The Year 2000 (Y2K) represents a significant business challenge to all companies using computers to support their business processes. Several factors complicate this challenge:

• Converting applications to be Y2K compliant can be expensive and resource intensive.
• Y2K compliance conversion does not yield any new functionality. It is therefore hard to justify getting started.
• There is no "silver bullet" that offers a universal or quick fix to the problem.
• Various platforms, languages, and software technologies are used within a company's portfolio of applications, requiring various Y2K solution approaches.

TITAN views Y2K as a business challenge that requires a technical solution. To address this business challenge, TITAN has developed a flexible, end-to-end solution known as TITAN 2000.

• TITAN 2000 features a formal methodology covering all phases of Y2K implementation.
• TITAN 2000 meets the guidelines of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) Capability Maturity Model (CMM) Level 3 for software development. TITAN 2000 ensures that we can help you accurately solve your Y2K problem on time and on budget.
• As part of the complete solution capabilities of TITAN 2000, TITAN has assembled a flexible set of tools that can handle a wide range of conversion scenarios. In addition to the TITAN proprietary toolkit, this set of tools includes best-of-breed products supplied by TITAN partners.
• TITAN 2000 is specifically designed to minimize conversion duration. Multiple applications can be converted in parallel, and within a application, multiple steps can be executed in parallel. The net result is compressed conversion cycle time. This is important because you must freeze application functionality during the conversion.
• A variation of TITAN 2000, known as TITAN 2000/Rehost, is available for those companies that want to convert and rehost concurrently, rather than just convert. (See Section 11.)

2. GETTING STARTED

The time to get started on Y2K conversion is NOW because:

• January 1, 2000, is less than three years away.
• This deadline is not flexible.
• Some forward-looking applications (for example, forecasting applications) will fail long before January 1, 2000.
• Conversion manpower will be in short supply soon.
• Conversion could be a matter of enterprise survivability.

Get started by following these steps:

• Identify an Executive Sponsor for Y2K.
• Select a Y2K Program Manager.
• Recruit a Y2K Team.
• Establish a Y2K Management Steering Committee (including managers from all segments of the business).
• Establish or adopt a formal methodology.
• Establish a Y2K Intranet Website.

TITAN recommends using an Intranet Website as the repository for all Y2K program information. The Intranet Website is built around a database and includes such key information as:

• Contacts
• Inventory of applications and programs
• Dependencies between applications
• Vendors, products, and services
• Awareness articles (for example, a Y2K "Tip of the Day")
• Survey results
• Program/project status

The Y2K Website helps ensure the success of your Y2K program by improving awareness, project management, corporate communications, as well as by saving time and money. It will be a valuable tool for Information Technology (IT) management for many years after the Y2K program is complete.

11. Y2K WITH A PAYOFF: A TWIST ON Y2K THAT OFFERS REAL ADVANTAGES

TITAN believes that for many companies, converting mainframe applications to be Y2K compliant may be just one step in a migration strategy that can save the enterprise money. The TITAN 2000/Rehost strategy is to rehost mainframe applications to UNIX-based processors while doing Y2K conversion. This strategy may work for you because:

• The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has ruled that Y2K conversion costs are expenses that must be taken during the quarter in which they are incurred; however, rehosting costs may be capitalized over several years.
• The rehosted application can now be operated more cost effectively.
• The costs of testing both Y2K and rehosting are combined. Since testing represents at least 50% of the cost, the savings are significant.
• No re-engineering is recommended during the TITAN 2000/Rehost process to minimize risk and costs. However, the rehosted application is now ready for re-engineering as needed.

This strategy can yield great advantages for our customers.
