Background of the Year 2000 Problem
The rapid approach of the Year 2000 presents all corporations utilizing computer based systems with varying degrees of potential failure. Many systems were designed to store dates in a compressed fashion, eliminating the century digits from their storage and processing formats. As dates drive many of the calculations performed by business and systems applications, potential failures could mean the crippling of entire core systems within a company's portfolio. It is estimated that 90% of all programs will be impacted by the year 2000 with up to 20% of business applications beginning to fail by 1996 as their application event horizons exceed 2000. System software and hardware are not immune to the problem. Hardware and software vendors will be required to address the issues in forthcoming releases as corporations realize their exposure.
The longer a company waits to address this issue, the more difficult it will be to complete the required changes in time to prevent system failures. Industry analysts estimate a serious shortage of mainframe programmers will occur no later than 1997, leading to potential salary increases up to 100%.
The DELTA 2000(TM) Solution
Comtex Systems has developed DELTA 2000(TM), a highly automated solution resulting in Year 2000-compliant software portfolios. The entire lifecycle is accelerated by an advanced conversion package that includes automated conversion tools for all software components that exist at a computer site including programs, files, databases and job streams. It is based on a "conversion language" that currently supports numerous programming languages and can be quickly adapted to support additional programming environments.
The toolset adapts to the nuances of an installation by reading source libraries, load libraries, system management logs, telecommunication monitor tables, job schedulers, and security packages and integrating the inventoried information into its repository. Comtex deploys its team of management and technology experts, working in conjunction with designated site representatives, to implement the conversion process. This translates to significantly reduced costs and greater reliability.
The major objectives of the DELTA 2000(TM) methodology are to:
- Maximize the automation of the conversion
- Minimize the impact to production systems' maintenance and enhancement
- Insulate the user community from the conversions
- Institute a progressive approach for converting logically linked subsystems (Conversion Clusters)
Our DELTA 2000(TM) Conversion Methodology is a unique, proven solution that dramatically reduces the time and effort needed to complete a Year 2000 conversion, thereby reducing the cost of the conversion.
Methodology Approach
- Survey your site to inventory software components, identify date impacts and remediation strategies, and organize into conversion clusters.
- Pilot one cluster through the full conversion process to tune the process, tools and techniques to your environment.
- Convert remaining clusters through prioritized cycles until your software is compliant.
Methodology Overview
The DELTA 2000(TM) methodology is comprised of four phases: Survey, Conversion, Testing and Implementation. The methodology is founded on our proven Project Control structures and mechanisms. Based on successful large-scale conversion and transition management engagements, Project Control results in a well-planned and managed conversion. A key component of Project Control is the Project Office, responsible for coordinating project activities and maintaining open communication avenues throughout your organization.
