BFLSL's Year 2000 Conversion Service Methodology

Year 2000 conversion is a dedicated area for BFL Software Ltd. BFLSL works closely with its clients to do an Enterprise-wide Project scoping with Inventory, Impact Analysis, Source and data conversion, Testing and Migration to deal with the Year 2000 problem. At the application level, BFLSL methodology incorporates six systematic steps, using its technical approach, project management technique and other complementary vendor tools, to effect the required millennium renovation.

Project Scoping and Impact Analysis

BFLSL works with the client to understand the system and collects the required information and do a project scoping for renovation of the code and data for Year 2000 compliance. The Impact Analysis is done by using AutoEnhancer/2000™ software developed by Peritus Software Services Inc. This product scans all the source code, exhaustively cross-references all date items, and determines the impact of century crossover based on their critical and non-critical nature. The product also gathers information on data files used in an application and helps in deciding the additional DASD and CPU requirements for handling the conversion of data files.

In this phase BFLSL identifies all the necessary application and data date sensitive elements and relevant system documentation . We then decide on the number of components for conversion, change co-ordination, and interfaces to various applications systems to carry the renovation phase wise.

Source and Data Conversion

Based on our client's requirements, BFLSL convert Source and Data, Source only, or data only. In general, we convert the data files and the source programs. With the help of the product, the user can specify the different conversion technique and formats to which existing date fields are to be changed. Associated copybooks and JCL are modified to reflect the changed date formats. The AutoEnhancer/2000™ software generates the required filter and bridges for compatible to testframe works, old data to new data, interface the new code to old code and vice versa. A bundle of exhaustive cross reference reports generated by the tool aids the Source, data Conversion, filters and wrappers.

Testing and Migration

We check the source code and data files for accuracy of changes. Regression testing on the converted application is done by testing with current, century sensitised data with different scenarios. During the conversion tool creates testframe work. Using the testframe works, pre and post year 2000 environments are simulated for complete testing. An advance migration plan along with the client put in place before moving the renovated code. In the migration stage a we verify the data integrity and handle all transactions correctly till application achieves stability. During this phase an evaluation is done for performance, throughput and reliability to achieve prescribed value.

PRODUCT Capabilities - AutoEnhancer/2000™

The AutoEnhancer/2000™ software helps us in the process of impact analysis, identification of all date fields in the data files, and Data Conversion. The tool sets converts the source code to an intermediate language to identifies and correlates all date occurrences in the source code to generate a set of comprehensive transactions that simplifies the process of source code conversion. The built-in identification rules and correction rules in the tool can be modified according the application requirement for the changes to be made to the date fields in the application.

In an integrated manner, it then converts existing non-century date fields to a user specified century format in the data files, and identifies associated program-code changes.

The Conversion Process saves conversion time and effort by:

Providing a user friendly environment with GUI facility
Identifying date sensitive items in an application
Making an estimate of the amount of program code that will have to be examined/changed by the tool
Reducing the time needed to research the impact of changes on all the application programs that access the converted files
Simplifying the verification of changed date formats (post-conversion)
Maintaining a full audit trail of all activities
By accomodating a variety of renovation strategies like date change first change next and so on
Simulating the pre and post Year 2000 environments in the data base for post-conversion testing
Identifying all instances of date items in a program in a cross- reference report, to facilitate source conversion
Identifying interfacing applications and data files, using the built-in JCL Analyzer.

The Tool currently caters to all COBOL, PL1 - VSAM/CICS/DB2/IMS based applications.
