Kuro5hin
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Kuro5hin (k5) is a community discussion website focused on technology and culture. The site runs on the GPLed Scoop collaborative system, originally developed for Kuro5hin.
Its motto is Technology and Culture, from the Trenches.
The site is remarkable for being almost entirely community driven. Any registered visitors can submit stories on any topic to the submission queue. They can also approve the stories of their liking on the queue though a "Moderate Submissions" panel with all the stories waited to be voted on. If the story receives a certain amount of points (positive votes - negative votes) it goes online for all visitors to see; otherwise it is bumped from the queue.
Rusty Foster, the site's founder, named Kuro5hin (pronounced "corrosion") as a pun on his first name. The 5 was inspired by Da5id in Snow Crash. Dylan Griffiths (Inoshiro) is the second in command as site administrator.
The community also holds a Wiki for Kuro5hin related material called Ko4ting (pronounced "coating" or "cavorting"). It houses information about the community, including a Greatest Stories Hall of Fame, Welcome/Introduction Guide, History of Kuro5hin, and a story directory.
